For this week’s third podcast review, Ema Sasic, Dan Bayer, and Nadia Dalimonte join me to discuss Ang Lee’s 1995 film “Sense And Sensibility,” written and starring Academy Award winner Emma Thompson, and featuring Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant, and Alan Rickman. The story follows the Dashwood sisters, members of a wealthy English landed-gentry family, as they face sudden destitution. They are forced to seek financial security through marriage. A commercial success that earned $135 million worldwide, the film received overwhelmingly positive reviews and many accolades, including three awards and eleven nominations at the 1995 British Academy Film Awards. It earned seven Academy Awards nominations, including for Best Picture and Best Actress. Thompson won Best Adapted Screenplay, becoming the only person to win Academy Awards for both acting and screenwriting. The film contributed to a resurgence in popularity for Austen’s works, and has led to many more productions in similar genres. It continues to be recognized as one of the best Austen adaptations of all time. What do we think of it 31 years after its release, with the new adaptation hitting theaters this weekend? Please tune in, video or audio only, as we discuss the themes, story, performances, Ang Lee’s direction, its awards season run, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Thank you for listening, and enjoy!
