“Soundtrack To A Coup d’Etat” had its world premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Award for Cinematic Innovation and received critical acclaim for its unique storytelling of how musicians Abbey Lincoln and Max Roach crashed the UN Security Council in protest against the murder of Congolese leader Patrice Lumumba during the Cold War. Director Johan Grimonprez was kind enough to spend a few minutes speaking with us about his work on the documentary, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now playing in theaters from Kino Lorber and is up for your consideration at this year’s Academy Awards for Best Documentary Feature.
