The Next Best Picture Podcast – Interview With “Once Upon A Time In Harlem” Co-DIrector David Greaves

“Once Upon A Time In Harlem” is a 2026 American documentary film directed by William Greaves and his son, David Greaves, and produced by Liani Greaves and Anne de Mare. It follows a gathering of the surviving members of the Harlem Renaissance. Shot in 1972, it remained unfinished for fifty years, until David revisited the footage following his father’s death. The film premiered in the Premieres section of the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, where it received universal acclaim. It was also screened at the Directors’ Fortnight section of the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where it was nominated for the L’Œil d’or, and later at the Telluride, Toronto, and New York Film Festivals. Greaves was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about his work and experience making the film, which you can watch or listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now playing in theaters from NEON. Thank you, and enjoy!
