This morning, the European Film Academy Board announced the selection of 29 titles for the first round of nominations for the 2024 European Film Awards (EFA). These films, representing 26 countries and including several Cannes award-winners, will now be put to vote by the Academy’s 5,000 members over the coming weeks. The winners will be announced at the European Film Awards ceremony in Lucerne, Switzerland, on December 7th.
To be eligible for a European Film Award, a film must be a European feature that, among other criteria, had its first official screening between June 1st, 2023, and May 31st, 2024, and be directed by a European. However, exceptions to the director requirement are allowed if the filmmaker is a European refugee or similar status or has lived and worked in the European film industry for at least five consecutive years.
