We were wondering if it would happen, and now, Variety and other trades are reporting it’s indeed happening. The 75th annual Primetime Emmy Awards and Creative Arts Emmy Awards will have their dates moved from September 18th and September 9th/10th, respectively. The reason why the Emmys are moving, for the first time since 2001, is due to the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers refusing to come to a fair deal with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA, which has resulted in two strikes that have shut the film and television industry down.
According to Variety’s article, the vendors for the awards show have been the first to find out. Despite the nominations announcement going through as planned on July 12th, we all knew this was a possibility the longer the two strikes carried on. The September 18th date was being kept as a placeholder, but now we know for sure the Emmys will be unable to keep this date. A new date has not yet been announced, but many are speculating some time, either toward the end of the year or at the beginning of 2024, right in the middle of the film awards season. This will result in one of the most prolonged Phase Two’s (the time post-nominations until the awards ceremony) ever for an awards season but with actors and writers unable to promote their shows due to the strikes, you likely won’t see much campaigning taking place other than for below-the-line categories and some directors for various shows.
