Emmy Award-winner Molly O’Brien’s Oscar-nominated Netflix documentary short film “The Only Girl in the Orchestra” will have its soundtrack released this Friday. The soundtrack by Oscar-nominee Laura Karpman (“American Fiction“) features nine tracks clocking in at just over 23 minutes of music.
“The Only Girl in the Orchestra” follows trailblazing double bassist Orin O’Brien who was never one to seek the spotlight, but when Leonard Bernstein hired her in 1966 as the first female musician in the New York Philharmonic, she inevitably became the focus of media attention and, ultimately, one of the most renowned musicians of a generation.
Karpman had the following to say regarding the score, “Classical music stands on the shoulders of Orin, whose sound and power defined not only the New York Philharmonic but generations of bass players and musicians. I too have been the only girl on many, many stages. It takes a giant like Orin to break glass ceilings and usher in beautiful, harmonious change. It was a tremendous to honor to write and produce this score under her wing.”
You can pre-save the album here. “The Only Girl In The Orchestra” is now available to stream on Netflix.
