The Next Best Picture Podcast – Interview With “Black Box Diaries” Director Shiori Itô

Black Box Diaries” had its world premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where it received universal acclaim for director/producer/subject Shiori Itô’s harrowing investigation into her own sexual assault and the subsequent cover-up by the Japanese government. The film was nominated for the World Cinema Documentary Grand Jury Prize and has recently been nominated for Best True Crime Documentary at the Critics Choice Documentary Awards. Itô was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about her film, her experience making it, and the challenging life events that have brought her here. Please be sure to check out the film, which will open at New York’s Film Forum this Friday, October 25th, and in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Chicago on November 1st, from MTV Documentary Films and is up for your consideration for Best Documentary Feature Film at this year’s Academy Awards. Thank you, and enjoy!
