The awards season calendar is taking shape. The 84th Annual Golden Globes will take place on Sunday, January 10th, 2027, airing live on CBS and streaming on Paramount+. Nikki Glaser returns as host for a third consecutive year. “I’m thrilled to host the Golden Globes for a third time,” Glaser said, “not only because it’s the greatest gig I’ve ever had, but because my sister has three kids and now we will be equal in the eyes of my parents and the Lord.” Never change, Nikki. Never change.

A week after the Oscars rolled out their own stringent AI regulations, the Globes have followed suit with updated guidelines of their own. The new rules stop short of an outright ban, stating that AI use “does not automatically disqualify a work from consideration, provided that human creative direction, artistic judgment, and authorship remain primary throughout the production process.” For acting categories specifically, performances “substantially generated or created by artificial intelligence” are not eligible, and any unauthorized use of a performer’s digital likeness or voice replication is explicitly off the table. Crucially, all submissions must now include a disclosure stating whether any generative AI was used at any point in the production of the completed work. The Globes’ eligibility committee reserves the right to request additional materials and may rule a submission ineligible if that information isn’t provided promptly.

On the podcast front, the category that debuted at this year’s ceremony — where “Good Hang With Amy Poehler” took home the inaugural award — is expanding slightly, with eligible podcasts now drawn from a curated top 30 list rather than last year’s top 25, as determined by Luminate. There’s also a notable tweak for non-English-language and independent films: they may now be submitted for individual acting categories without needing to be entered in the Best Motion Picture category.

As for the full timeline, submissions open June 1st and close October 30th. Nominations will be announced on December 7th, with final ballots going out on December 18th and due back January 2nd, 2027 — just over a week before the ceremony itself. The full timeline can be seen below:

The Golden Globes have undergone a bit of a transformation in recent years. After a reckoning around the turn of the decade that forced them off the air (never forget the live announcement of the 2021 awards, exclusively on Twitter), the Hollywood Foreign Press Association was rebranded as the Golden Globe Foundation. With this rebranding came an expansion of the membership, which has led the nominees to become a bit more critically minded and less, well, Globes-y in the past few years. But one thing that hasn’t changed is their undeniable impact on the awards race in general. Although they share no voter overlap with the Academy, they’re undoubtedly still among the most influential awards in shaping the conversations and trends that help determine an Oscar winner due to their televised broadcast and social media reach. As such, let’s take a look at the Oscar categories shared with the Golden Globes and how they might be affected by last night’s winners.

Best Screenplay

Unlike the Oscars (and most other award shows), the Golden Globes don’t separate their writing prize into Adapted and Original categories, throwing all contenders into the mix regardless of source material. “One Battle After Another” won in what was certainly a bigger surprise than its victories in Picture or Director. Chalamet is locked in for what’s looking more and more like a season-long sweep, triumphing once again over his closest competition (Leonardo DiCaprio for “One Battle After Another” and Ethan Hawke for “Blue Moon“). The only question remains: Will he win at the SAG Awards (sorry, the Actor Awards) for the second year in a row? Last year, he briefly paused Adrien Brody’s victory march for his eventual Oscar-winning work in “The Brutalist” when his fellow actors honored him for his performance as Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown.” The last time (and only) that SAG gave an actor back-to-back solo wins in their film categories was to Renee Zellweger, who won Best Actress for 2002’s “Chicago” and Best Supporting Actress the following year for “Cold Mountain.“ It remains to be seen if SAG-AFTRA voters will break this two-decade-plus-long trend to award Chalamet twice in a row.

As for Moura, this Golden Globe win was exactly what his awards campaign needed after a snub by the recently announced Actor Award nominations and an additional shocking absence from the BAFTA longlist mentions. As such, this is essentially the end of the road for Moura until the Academy Awards, where he now seems fairly secure for a nomination.

This will likely be her final major victory this season. Still, her Golden Globe win has helped secure her presumptive Oscar nomination, which is excellent news for the intentionally off-putting film. It’s almost certain that Byrne will be her film’s sole nomination, meaning the big televised moment the Golden Globes granted her is extremely important for raising the film’s profile with Academy voters.

Jacob Elordi (“Frankenstein“) didn’t repeat his surprise Critics’ Choice win here, with the Globe instead going to beloved veteran Stellan Skarsgård for “Sentimental Value.” Since the film premiered at Cannes last May, many had predicted that he would sail to an Academy Award win, aided by an assumed avalanche of critics’ prizes and industry adoration for a man whose career has spanned six decades but has somehow not resulted in a single Oscar nomination. But the critics’ prizes instead favored Benicio del Toro for his shorter, scene-stealing performance in “One Battle After Another.” Skarsgård was also surprisingly left off the Actor Awards nominations, along with all of his “Sentimental Value” co-stars. He desperately needed this win to remain in the conversation. There’s a very good chance that he’ll repeat this win at the BAFTAs, but even so, he’ll face stiff competition from whoever triumphs at the Actor Awards (most likely del Toro or Elordi).

But Taylor’s performance also has qualities that could specifically appeal to actors. This is likely to be the first time the relative newcomer to screen acting has been seen by some SAG-AFTRA voters, and it’s the kind of breakout performance most actors would kill to give. Furthermore, knowing BAFTA’s tastes, there’s a good chance that Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas could win for “Sentimental Value,“ as long as she receives a nomination. If anyone is looking for concrete guidance on who to predict, wisdom says that whoever wins the Actor Award will probably be the best bet for Oscar glory.

But this category has arguably never had as many high-profile contenders as this year. Four of the Globes’ nominees for Best Picture – Non-English Language were also nominated in their general Best Picture categories (“It Was Just an Accident,” “The Secret Agent,“ and “Sentimental Value“ in Drama, “No Other Choice“ in Musical or Comedy, along with “Nouvelle Vague,“ which missed an additional nomination here). Furthermore, all six of the Globe nominees are also their respective country’s selection for the Oscar, which isn’t the case in most years (the additional two Globe nominees in this category were “Sirāt“ and “The Voice of Hind Rajab“).

We’re almost guaranteed to see at least two international films receive Best Picture Oscar nominations, along with additional notable nods in the acting, writing, and directing categories. “The Secret Agent“ will likely receive a Best Actor nomination, but it has a lesser chance of being recognized in Best Director or Best Original Screenplay.

After the BAFTA Longlists and the PGA nominations the other day, several Best Picture players have been put down. “Wicked: For Good” missing Best Ensemble at the Actor Awards and the PGA has doomed the popular film’s chances for good. “No Other Choice” missing Best Adapted Screenplay at the BAFTA longlists means that the film no longer has an above-the-line category it could feasibly get into. “Jay Kelly” has been unlikely ever since the film, which revolves around the reflections of an A-list actor, blanked at the Actor Awards, but its poor performance on the BAFTA longlists and exclusion from the PGA 10 are two more nails in its coffin. “Avatar: Fire & Ash” has been on shaky ground since missing the Critics’ Choice nomination, and now it’s missing the PGA to other box-office successes like “F1” and “Weapons.”

There are also bubble contenders whose strength was proven today. “Bugonia” is now solidly in Best Picture after its BAFTA longlist domination and PGA nomination. With its PGA nomination, “Train Dreams” similarly feels secure. Alongside “Frankenstein,” “Hamnet,” “Marty Supreme,” “One Battle After Another,” “Sentimental Value,” “Sinners,” we now seemingly have eight safe nominees in Best Picture. As a result, the films now in contention for the last two slots in Best Picture are “Blue Moon,” “F1,” “It Was Just an Accident,” “The Secret Agent,” and “Weapons.” The Golden Globes this Sunday will be the next barometer of Best Picture strength, especially since Oscar voting begins Monday.

The Globes are particularly critical for “It Was Just an Accident” and “The Secret Agent,” the two international films in contention for the last two Best Picture slots. While industry awards have largely ignored the feats of these international films, the Globes have been praised for their acknowledgment of international cinema across the board. If these films want to win anything big, it has to be here. Even though it has missed at the top category at all industry awards, “It Was Just an Accident” will probably get into Best Picture due to its status as a Palme d’Or winner and its buzz in the category all season long. An Original Screenplay nomination also feels likely, considering the film’s Film, Director, and Screenplay nominations at the Golden Globes. Though not secure, considering “Weapons,” “Blue Moon,” and “The Secret Agent” are also in the hunt for the last two slots in Original Screenplay. With BAFTA Longlist misses for both Best Film and Best Director, Panahi looks much weaker in Best Director than he did a few days ago. But a televised win in either Best International Film, Best Screenplay, or even Best Film – Drama could completely change that. If the widely beloved Jafar Panahi can deliver a heartfelt speech about what this recognition means to him, despite the challenges he faced in making the film, that goodwill could push him over the edge for a Best Director nomination.

“The Secret Agent” is on much shakier ground for a Best Picture nomination, but it does show signs of strength. The Casting shortlist at the Oscars, the Critics’ Choice win for Best International Film, and the Golden Globe nomination in Best Film – Drama are all lovely feathers in its cap. It also helps that the film’s lead, Wagner Moura, stands a strong chance at a nomination. What doesn’t help, though, is that Moura missed out on a Best Actor nomination at the Actor Awards and a BAFTA longlist for the Same Category. Nonetheless, Moura is widely tipped to win the Globe due to how receptive voters were to the film and the passion he has for the role (i.e., his Best Actor win at Cannes). A Globe win here would help solidify a slot in the Best Actor lineup, as Globe winners in the Drama field rarely miss a nomination. “The Secret Agent” could then easily ride that added momentum to nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture. But if Moura loses the Globe, he could easily be usurped by Jesse Plemons in the Oscar lineup. And if Moura cannot get into Best Actor, “The Secret Agent’s” chances in Best Picture are slim. That said, a Moura loss would not be the end of the world if “The Secret Agent” repeats its feat at the Critics’ Choice Awards and wins International Film here. It would actually feel far more significant this time, since the film’s director, Kleber Mendonça Filho, would be able to deliver a speech.

Finally, few were taking “Blue Moon” seriously as a Best Picture contender until its surprise Golden Globe nomination in Best Film – Comedy. Ethan Hawke has always been a threat in Best Actor, especially since his film is being campaigned by Sony Pictures Classics. For those who are unaware, Sony Pictures Classics is a legendary acting campaigner at the Oscars. They were behind “I’m Still Here” landing nominations in Best Actress and, in the most shocking nod in the category in years, Best Picture! The Best Picture push could not have happened without Fernanda Torres’s exciting Golden Globe win in Best Actress. It became undeniable how significant her nomination would be for Brazil, which has long been a beacon of cinema, and the film’s momentum, plus its expert campaigning, propelled it into Best Picture. A narrative could also form around “Blue Moon” should Hawke upset Timothée Chalamet and Leonardo DiCaprio and take home the Globe, a film that achingly captures how painful it is to love being an artist but never be recognized for it. He is an undeniably charismatic actor, and his Globe win could be the push “Blue Moon” needs to surge as a Best Picture contender. With a package of Best Actor and potentially Best Original Screenplay, a Best Picture nomination suddenly becomes all the more likely.

Should none of these wins happen, the case for “F1” and “Weapons” in Best Picture grows stronger, both of which landed PGA nominations on Friday. Both films have strong audience reception and could easily emerge as default picks in such a split race. “F1” could get in entirely through its popularity and its below-the-line strength. It is win-competitive in Best Sound and Film Editing and has the possibility of showing up in other tech categories like Best Visual Effects, Original Song, and Cinematography for its haul. “Weapons,” on the other hand, would hope to ride off on an Amy Madigan sweep in Best Supporting Actress and an Original Screenplay nomination. It doesn’t hurt that the film has been nominated for Best Casting at both the Oscars and the BAFTAs! Ultimately, the Globes have the opportunity to give an extra boost to several Best Picture contenders currently on the bubble. Still, if they refuse, two populist picks could easily fill the open slots.

The 83rd Golden Globes are this Sunday, and while my counterpart Daniel Howat has already broken down what the film nominations signal for the Oscar race, the television side tells an equally fascinating story, less about outrage and omissions, and more about where the medium currently stands as we bridge one Emmy awards year into the next. Rather than treating the Globes as a referendum on what was “snubbed,” this year’s nominations feel more like a temperature check on the television landscape: which shows still have momentum, which are solidifying themselves as long-term contenders, and which new series are positioning themselves early for the 2026 Emmy conversation.

What’s immediately clear is that the Globes continue to function as a transitional body, rewarding late-breaking prestige, reaffirming the staying power of recent Emmy players, and occasionally throwing curveballs that reflect shifting tastes rather than strict consensus.

One of the clearest takeaways is how strongly this year’s Emmy contenders have carried over into the Golden Globes conversation. Emmy Award-winning shows like “The Studio,” “Severance,” “Adolescence,” “The White Lotus,” and “The Pitt” have carried over; their continued presence (or at least visibility) here reinforces that they’re not done shaping the narrative. In particular, “Severance” and “The White Lotus” feel less like returning champions and more like modern institutions, series that voters instinctively rally around as benchmarks for prestige television. Even when individual performances don’t show up exactly where expected, the shows themselves remain firmly embedded in the awards bloodstream heading into the next cycle.

At the same time, the Globes are adopting new shows, just as they always do. “Pluribus” landing in Best Drama Series despite only six of nine episodes airing underscores how much trust voters place in established auteurs. Vince Gilligan’s reputation alone seems to have carried the show across the finish line, suggesting that the Globes are increasingly comfortable rewarding potential as much as completion. Recent Critics Choice Award winner Rhea Seehorn’s long-overdue nomination further supports that idea: this isn’t just about the show’s first season, but about years of goodwill finally cashing in. It’s hard not to read this as a reminder that sustained critical respect still matters, and can eventually pay off.

That same openness extends to performances, elevating uneven material. Helen Mirren’s nomination for “MobLand” and Amanda Seyfried’s recognition for “Long Bright River” both point to a voting body willing to single out acting even when the series itself hasn’t fully broken through. In a television landscape more crowded than ever, this kind of selective recognition suggests the Globes are less rigid about “package deals” than the Emmys tend to be. Star power still matters here, but not cynically; it’s being used as a lens to spotlight individual work that might otherwise be lost in the churn of content.

Comedy, too, appears to be benefiting from this. Glen Powell’s nomination for “Chad Powers” reflects a growing comfort with shows that blur genre lines and embrace oddball sensibilities. It’s not a traditional prestige comedy, nor a critic-proof juggernaut. Still, it signals that Globe voters remain interested in cultural buzz and personality-driven performances, especially when they feel slightly unexpected from their leading stars. That kind of recognition can often be an early boost for shows hoping to gain Emmy traction later, once broader industry consensus has time to catch up.

Even when familiar names or shows don’t appear exactly where one might expect, the larger picture suggests less rejection than recalibration. The sheer density of acclaimed drama, across genres, platforms, and formats, means that absence often reflects competition rather than dismissal. In that sense, the television categories feel less like a closed gate and more like a rotating door, with momentum, timing, and narrative playing just as significant a role as raw quality. Take for example, Tom Pelphrey in “Task.” I’d like to blame the announcement of a second season, which pushed “Task” from Limited Series to Drama, into the Globes’s voting body skipping over Pelphrey’s performance of Robbie Prendergrast, the morally-conflicted father who will do whatever it takes to provide for his family, but that just isn’t true. Seeing how they nominated Pelphrey’s counterpart, Mark Ruffalo, in Best Actor, attention was paid toward show, but it appears that Globe voters decided to copy/paste from the Emmys. Four out of six of the Best Supporting Actor nominees were nominated at the 2025 Emmys, and the other two are from Globes-loved shows: “Adolescence” (Ashley Walters) and “The Morning Show” (Billy Crudup). It would’ve been nice to see the voting body recognize some differing performances from shows that missed the Best Drama Series nod, but I guess there’s always next year.

Ultimately, this year’s Golden Globe television nominations reinforced what many already know: Emmy awards season is never neatly siloed. The line between “this year’s contenders” and “next year’s Emmy players” is blurrier than ever. Shows are building reputations over multiple seasons, voters are responding earlier to creative confidence, and star-driven performances can still punch through even when consensus lags behind. If nothing else, the Globes remain an imperfect but revealing snapshot of where television is headed, and who’s already positioning themselves to lead the conversation in 2026.

What stood out to you most in the Golden Globe television nominations?
