Best PictureNot to undercut the very purpose of this article, but this is one of a handful of categories that can easily be predicted with the simple answer of “‘One Battle After Another,‘ next question.” Paul Thomas Anderson’s masterwork easily nabbed Best Picture – Musical or Comedy at the Globes, further solidifying its extreme frontrunner status. In the parallel category of Best Picture – Drama, “Hamnet” was victorious in a bit of a surprise win. Most awards obsessives had picked “Sinners” to be victorious here, given its presumed runner-up position in Best Picture behind “One Battle After Another” (it’s quantifiably in second place in terms of precursor wins). Notably, “Sinners” did triumph in the ersatz Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category, which has become something of a damning win since it was introduced two ceremonies ago. Since then, every winner of this category (“Barbie” and “Wicked“) has gone on to lose their respective Best Picture category later in the night. Still, “Hamnet’s” victory here only further aids “One Battle After Another,” because if there’s a question of which film is truly in second place, it’s harder for an underdog to stage an upset win.

Best DirectorSimilarly, this category is all but certain at this point. Paul Thomas Anderson won for “One Battle After Another,” to the surprise of basically no one. Anyone hoping for a last-minute surge for Ryan Coogler (“Sinners“) or Jafar Panahi (“It Was Just an Accident“) can essentially put those dreams to bed and prepare for Anderson’s inevitable Oscar victory. Barring an extremely unlikely loss at BAFTA or DGA, it’s going to continue to be one award after another for the celebrated auteur.

Best Screenplay

Unlike the Oscars (and most other award shows), the Golden Globes don’t separate their writing prize into Adapted and Original categories, throwing all contenders into the mix regardless of source material. “One Battle After Another” won in what was certainly a bigger surprise than its victories in Picture or Director. Predictions were generally split between the eventual winner and “Sinners,” with some betting on “It Was Just an Accident” and “Sentimental Value” (notably, all of these films will compete for Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars). As with Picture and Director, the win for “One Battle After Another” here only further firms its lead in Best Adapted Screenplay, which has essentially never been in doubt all season.

Best ActorThe Golden Globes split their lead acting categories into two races: Drama and Musical or Comedy. On the Drama side, Wagner Moura won for the Brazilian film “The Secret Agent,” whereas Timothée Chalamet repeated his recent Critics’ Choice victory for the ostensible comedy “Marty Supreme.” In terms of their Oscar chances, both men needed these wins. Chalamet is locked in for what’s looking more and more like a season-long sweep, triumphing once again over his closest competition (Leonardo DiCaprio for “One Battle After Another” and Ethan Hawke for “Blue Moon“). The only question remains: Will he win at the SAG Awards (sorry, the Actor Awards) for the second year in a row? Last year, he briefly paused Adrien Brody’s victory march for his eventual Oscar-winning work in “The Brutalist” when his fellow actors honored him for his performance as Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown.” The last time (and only) that SAG gave an actor back-to-back solo wins in their film categories was to Renee Zellweger, who won Best Actress for 2002’s “Chicago” and Best Supporting Actress the following year for “Cold Mountain.“ It remains to be seen if SAG-AFTRA voters will break this two-decade-plus-long trend to award Chalamet twice in a row.

As for Moura, this Golden Globe win was exactly what his awards campaign needed after a snub by the recently announced Actor Award nominations and an additional shocking absence from the BAFTA longlist mentions. As such, this is essentially the end of the road for Moura until the Academy Awards, where he now seems fairly secure for a nomination.

Best ActressOn the other hand, this lead category feels like the easiest to bet on of all four acting races. Jessie Buckley is unquestionably the far-out frontrunner for her highly emotional performance in “Hamnet,“ and she will likely repeat her CCA and Globe victories at the Actor Awards and BAFTAs. Rose Byrne (“If I Had Legs I’d Kick You“) picked up the Musical or Comedy lead female acting prize, capping off her highly respectable precursor run that saw her sweeping the season’s most important critics’ prizes, including the New York and Los Angeles critic awards and the National Board of Review. This will likely be her final major victory this season. Still, her Golden Globe win has helped secure her presumptive Oscar nomination, which is excellent news for the intentionally off-putting film. It’s almost certain that Byrne will be her film’s sole nomination, meaning the big televised moment the Golden Globes granted her is extremely important for raising the film’s profile with Academy voters.

Best Supporting ActorBoth supporting races continue to be wildly, excitingly unpredictable. Jacob Elordi (“Frankenstein“) didn’t repeat his surprise Critics’ Choice win here, with the Globe instead going to beloved veteran Stellan Skarsgård for “Sentimental Value.” Since the film premiered at Cannes last May, many had predicted that he would sail to an Academy Award win, aided by an assumed avalanche of critics’ prizes and industry adoration for a man whose career has spanned six decades but has somehow not resulted in a single Oscar nomination. But the critics’ prizes instead favored Benicio del Toro for his shorter, scene-stealing performance in “One Battle After Another.” Skarsgård was also surprisingly left off the Actor Awards nominations, along with all of his “Sentimental Value” co-stars. He desperately needed this win to remain in the conversation. There’s a very good chance that he’ll repeat this win at the BAFTAs, but even so, he’ll face stiff competition from whoever triumphs at the Actor Awards (most likely del Toro or Elordi).

Best Supporting ActressIn what proved to be a preview of the film’s forthcoming dominance over the night, the ceremony’s first award went to Teyana Taylor for her thunderous performance that reigns over the first chapter of “One Battle After Another.“ At the recent Critics’ Choice Awards, Amy Madigan triumphed for her delicious villain turn in the horror film “Weapons.“ If she had won at the Golden Globes, it’s hard to imagine that she wouldn’t have gone on to inevitably win the Oscar, especially given that it’s the sort of attention-grabbing showcase work that her fellow performers are likely to award at the Actor Awards. But Taylor’s performance also has qualities that could specifically appeal to actors. This is likely to be the first time the relative newcomer to screen acting has been seen by some SAG-AFTRA voters, and it’s the kind of breakout performance most actors would kill to give. Furthermore, knowing BAFTA’s tastes, there’s a good chance that Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas could win for “Sentimental Value,“ as long as she receives a nomination. If anyone is looking for concrete guidance on who to predict, wisdom says that whoever wins the Actor Award will probably be the best bet for Oscar glory.

Best International FilmIn terms of Oscar predictions, this remains one of the trickier categories. “The Secret Agent“ followed up its Critics’ Choice Award win in the same category with a Golden Globe win, which might make some believe it’s the automatic Oscar frontrunner. But this category has arguably never had as many high-profile contenders as this year. Four of the Globes’ nominees for Best Picture – Non-English Language were also nominated in their general Best Picture categories (“It Was Just an Accident,” “The Secret Agent,“ and “Sentimental Value“ in Drama, “No Other Choice“ in Musical or Comedy, along with “Nouvelle Vague,“ which missed an additional nomination here). Furthermore, all six of the Globe nominees are also their respective country’s selection for the Oscar, which isn’t the case in most years (the additional two Globe nominees in this category were “Sirāt“ and “The Voice of Hind Rajab“). 

We’re almost guaranteed to see at least two international films receive Best Picture Oscar nominations, along with additional notable nods in the acting, writing, and directing categories. “The Secret Agent“ will likely receive a Best Actor nomination, but it has a lesser chance of being recognized in Best Director or Best Original Screenplay. Its closest competitors are likely to be nominated in several important categories: Joachim Trier’s “Sentimental Value“ is destined for an Original Screenplay nomination, along with a number of acting nods, and Jafar Panahi’s Palme d’Or winner “It Was Just an Accident“ could very well win Best Original Screenplay. Not to mention, those two films feel more secure for Best Director nominations than “The Secret Agent“ does – they both were nominated in the Golden Globes directing category, whereas Kleber Mendonça Filho has yet to make much of a dent in that race for “The Secret Agent.“ Regardless, all points to a very thinly spread, highly competitive Best International Film race, and if nothing else, the dual Golden Globe wins for “The Secret Agent“ will only increase the film’s overall profile. Let’s not forget last year’s Brazilian contender “I’m Still Here,“ which went from a semi-surprise Best Actress Golden Globe win to a definite-surprise Best Picture Oscar nomination. The Golden Globes may have been exactly the boost that “The Secret Agent“ needed to vault to the top position in this category.

Best Animated FeatureTo basically no one’s surprise, the cultural sensation “KPop Demon Hunters“ won here. In previous years, whenever Disney or Pixar had a halfway-decent contender, it was often correctly presumed that they’d sail to Oscar victory. But this decade has been tough for the animation powerhouses, with only one winner from either studio (2021’s “Encanto“). Last year’s win for the comparatively smaller, independent film “Flow“ proved that Oscar voters no longer default to Disney-slash-Pixar, and the overall strength of “KPop Demon Hunters“ – both as a film and a cultural moment – only further assures that it’ll take the Oscar.

Best Original Song

But that’s not the only place “KPop Demon Hunters“ will triumph. The film’s ubiquitous earworm “Golden“ won the Golden Globe for Best Original Song, meaning the tune’s chances of winning the Oscar are only (to borrow from the lyrics) going up, up, up. It certainly doesn’t hurt that it’s a smash hit in its own right – it’s currently in contention for four Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year, and it topped the Billboard 200 chart for a total of 18 weeks across 2025. It’s undoubtedly the biggest film song since “Shallow“ from “A Star is Born,“ if not bigger, and it’s sure to add another golden (sorry) accolade to its world domination at the Academy Awards.

Best Original ScoreIn what was undoubtedly the rudest moment of the night, this award was presented to Ludwig Göransson for “Sinners” during a commercial break. Still, his victory here was far from surprising, given both how essential music is to the story of “Sinners“ and how popular the composer has been with awards voters. It’s almost guaranteed that the composer will win his third Oscar for this work.

This year, I took the liberty of compiling an aggregate of 64 Golden Globes voters’ Letterboxd ratings to better understand the voting body’s temperature on 2025’s standout titles. This spreadsheet ranking can be accessed here. Note that a high average rating alone does not indicate strength, as films must be both well-received and highly visible. Thus, the metric I used for this ranking was the number of Letterboxd ratings the film received that were four stars or above out of 5. Additionally, this metric is only helpful for categories like Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, and Best Animated Feature. In the acting categories, visibility is more important given how many respected actors are competing for films with mixed reviews.

Here are a few key takeaways from my spreadsheet…

1. Underestimate “The Secret Agent” At Your Own Peril“The Secret Agent” was the biggest surprise of this spreadsheet for me. Not only does it have the third-highest average rating of any 2025 film—just behind “Silent Friend” and “One Battle After Another“—but it also boasts a 4.32 rating, and it is also one of the year’s most widely screened films. In fact, it has the second-most 4-star or higher ratings! Golden Globes voters are clearly watching and loving “The Secret Agent.” This passion, combined with Wagner Moura becoming a clear frontrunner in Best Drama Actor and “The Secret Agent” gaining more traction as a Best Picture threat, makes a very compelling case for a nomination in Best Motion Picture – Drama. If the last slot is between that and “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” I’d place my bets on the former. And in general, all four of NEON’s main priorities are well positioned to be nominated in their respective Best Motion Picture categories; they all boast among the year’s highest average scores!

2. “Wicked: For Good” Is In Trouble“Wicked: For Good’s” chances of winning awards dropped when its review embargo ended. While it is doing well at the box office and is beloved by audiences, its critical reception is uncomfortably lukewarm. Though PGA and Critics’ Choice nominations are still fairly attainable, it needs the Golden Globe nomination here to stay in the conversation. But with 25 ratings, it has now dipped below a 3.0 on the Golden Globe voter aggregate. Only three voters gave it four stars or higher! Now, the first “Wicked” received an average score of 3.28 from this sample, but the crucial difference is that 19 of 37 voters rated it four stars or higher. “Wicked: For Good” does not seem to have the same fervor behind it as its predecessor. It can still land a nomination, though, as films like “Jay Kelly” and “The Testament of Ann Lee” are not exactly adored by this voting body either. 

3. “Arco” Can Upset “KPop Demon Hunters”Following “KPop Demon Hunters‘” win at NYFCC on Tuesday, many understandably jumped in to say that “KPop Demon Hunters” will handily sweep the animated film awards—aside from BAFTA, which it is ineligible for. However, I maintain that “Arco” is still in this fight. My sample of Golden Globe voters seems fairly lukewarm toward the energetic Sony Pictures Animation film, with an average rating of 3.18. Only three of the seventeen voters gave it more than four stars. The sample size is admittedly small, but given that it is Netflix’s most-watched film of all time, visibility is in its favor. Comparatively, “Arco” has an average score of 3.87, with 10 out of 15 voters rating it four stars or higher. It is certainly possible that my sample did not accurately capture the number of HUNTR/X fans in the Golden Globes! However, all I am saying is that this race is not as locked up as it appears. 

4. Despite Being A Legend, Daniel Day-Lewis Is Unlikely To Happen For “Anemone”Daniel Day-Lewis made his grand return to acting with his son’s debut film “Anemone.” While he has been praised across the board for his performance, this hype has not seemed to convince Golden Globe members to seek out the film. Of my sample of 64 voters, only 4 watched “Anemone.” And did these select few at least like it? The answer is a resounding no, as the film has an average score of 1.88—the lowest out of any film in my chart. There are acting contenders in films with mixed scores, like Jeremy Allen White in “Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere” and Julia Roberts in “After the Hunt,” but both of their films have 20+ ratings. If voters are not watching “Anemone,” it may not matter that Day-Lewis is one of the greatest living actors, turning in another fantastic performance. 

5. “One Battle After Another” Continues To Be UnstoppableThis is hardly an insight I can attribute to my spreadsheet: anyone who has been paying even half-attention to the awards race this year knows that “One Battle After Another” is our frontrunner. However, I do find it interesting just how dominant the film is with voters here. It has the second-highest average score in the chart, sitting at a whopping 4.39. For perspective on how critical these voters are with their ratings, it is the only film competing in the Comedy or Musical category with an average above 4.0. Its main competition, “Marty Supreme,” has a respectable but notably lower score of 3.98. “One Battle After Another” also has the most ratings above four stars and the most logs of the year. It has won top prizes at the Gothams and at NYFCC so far, and it shows no signs of stopping its awards trajectory here. The question at this point is not whether “One Battle After Another” will win here, but by how much.

“THE BRUTALIST” WINS DRAMA PICTURE, DIRECTOR, AND ACTOR
Brady Corbet winning Best Director was one of the few foregone conclusions heading into the Golden Globes, and the Oscar race for Best Director as a whole. He did indeed pull out the win last night, delivering a compelling pre-written speech about shooting on film and honoring his young daughter in the audience. While there was little doubt about who would win the Oscar, he solidified himself even more. On the Best Picture front, the race was far less clear heading into the ceremony. “The Brutalist” beat out “Conclave” for the win in Best Motion Picture, Drama, a much-needed victory to give the film greater momentum for this next leg of the race, especially as it goes wide in theatrical release later this week. Even so, it’s still questionable how well “The Brutalist” will play on a preferential ballot at the Oscars. Will the film’s second half work for a wider voting body, or will something like “Conclave” take advantage of having a broader appeal? Time will tell, but this was a good boost for “The Brutalist,” nevertheless.

Additionally, Adrien Brody picked up a win for his towering performance in “The Brutalist,” his first Golden Globe. While the battle between Brody and Timothée Chalamet for “A Complete Unknown” is still unfinished, this was likely Chalamet’s best shot at a televised win. It seems much more believable that CCA, the BAFTAs, and even SAG would vote for Brody over Chalamet, especially after Brody snags the first win of the season. While the performances and films couldn’t be any more different, 2022 saw Austin Butler defeat Brendan Fraser at the Globes, only for Fraser to win the Oscar in the end. Even if Chalamet had won the Globe, it would’ve been highly comparable to Butler’s win. Now that Brody won, it’s tough to imagine what path Chalamet has to a victory unless SAG and/or CCA have a surprise up their sleeve. The race isn’t over, but this is exactly what Brody needed.

“EMILIA PÉREZ” WINS FOUR GLOBES, INCLUDING MUSICAL/COMEDY PICTURE
Though none of the wins for “Emilia Pérez” were truly surprises, it was a much-needed haul for the Netflix film. It took home wins for Best Motion Picture – Musical/Comedy, Best Foreign Language Film, Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña, and Best Original Song for “El Mal.” With “The Brutalist” and “Emilia Pérez” winning the two top awards of the evening, there’s undoubtedly some clarity forming around the Best Picture race, though the same questions around the preferential ballot still linger for “Emilia Pérez,” too. With a Best Picture race that feels up in the air, it’s hard not to notice the comparisons to 2021, in which a Netflix film won Best Picture at the Globes, as did a big musical, and then a film entirely overlooked by the Globes ended up winning the Oscar. Could that happen again with a feel-good indie film like “Sing Sing?” Its performance at the SAG nominations will be telling.

While Best Supporting Actress has been a two-horse race between Saldaña and Ariana Grande thus far, Grande’s loss here is tough to ignore. Like Chalamet, it’s tough to see the path for Grande now that she’s lost the Globe. She could certainly still win at CCA but will likely lose at SAG and BAFTA, leaving a pathway to the Oscar win challenging. A sweep for Saldaña feels, and seems, likely. She’s been in the industry for so long and stars in the top three highest-grossing films of all time. It seems logical that her time has come.

In the Best Original Song race, where two “Emilia Pérez” songs have been nominated all season, “El Mal” pulls ahead as the contender to rally behind. Saldaña gives that song a boost as well since it’s her show-stopping number. If any other song were to surprise, it would’ve happened here.

FERNANDA TORRES AND DEMI MOORE STUN IN BEST ACTRESS RACES
Both Best Actress categories contained big surprises at this year’s Golden Globes. In Best Actress, Musical/Comedy, Demi Moore took home a shock win for her performance in “The Substance.” With a film as provocative as “The Substance,” it’s been a bit of a bubble contender all year. It’s been a question all season: will AMPAS go for a horror film like this? Moore’s win here is an incredible boost. While it remains to be seen if she can win the Oscar or not, this at least solidifies her place in the race for a nomination. Mikey Madison and Karla Sofía Gascón both could’ve benefited from a televised speech, but Moore drove it home with a pitch-perfect speech about her years in this industry and the ways in which she’s been written off. These are the sorts of speeches that win Oscars.

On the Drama side, most had predicted an easy win for Angelina Jolie’s performance in “Maria,” especially as she is the only nominee in the Globes category largely predicted for an Oscar nomination. Instead, Fernanda Torres won for her performance in Brazil’s “I’m Still Here.” It’s a stunning upset for a phenomenal performance. Does this mean she’s guaranteed an Oscar nomination? Not quite. This is still a new Golden Globes organization, so it’s possible that their tastes are just more bent toward international films. Still, it’s tough not to look at history. The voting body may be different, but the effect of a televised win is largely the same.

Only twice in Golden Globes history has a woman won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama and not received an Oscar nomination, and both of those instances have important caveats. In 2008, Kate Winslet won for “Revolutionary Road” but was nominated at the Oscars for “The Reader” instead, so she still ultimately received an Oscar nomination that year. Then, in 1988, the Golden Globes had an absurd three-way tie for Best Actress. That year, Jodie Foster (“The Accused”), Sigourney Weaver (“Gorillas in the Mist”), and Shirley MacLaine (“Madame Sousatzka”) tied for Best Actress. MacLaine did not receive an Oscar nomination, but it’s hard to quantify that when three women won the category that year. No one else has won this category and missed an Oscar nomination. If Torres missed the Oscar nomination, it would be unprecedented.

“ANORA” GOES HOME EMPTY-HANDED
It was a formidable contender in numerous races, from Best Motion Picture, Musical/Comedy, Best Actress – Musical/Comedy, and Best Screenplay, but “Anora” went home empty-handed. It’s like that “Anora” came in second place in many of these categories and is still solidly in the Oscar race but missed out on a much-needed boost.

In Best Actress, Mikey Madison lost to Demi Moore, while Best Screenplay went to “Conclave.” The screenplay loss hurts the most, as “Anora” is currently considered the frontrunner to win Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars. Still, losing to a film that will compete in a separate category at the Oscars helps. The Golden Globes rarely go for adapted screenplays such as “Conclave,” so seeing it win here is interesting. The last adapted screenplays to win at the Globes were “Steve Jobs” in 2015 and “The Social Network” in 2010. Either way, “Conclave” and “Anora” are still the frontrunners in each screenplay category, but Sean Baker missed out on a boost.

SEBASTIAN STAN WINS BEST ACTOR, MUSICAL/COMEDY
One of the most unpredictable categories of the evening was Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical/Comedy. Predictions were all over the map. In the end, Sebastian Stan took home the win for his role in “A Different Man.” How does this affect the Oscar race? It’s tough to say. Jesse Eisenberg winning here would’ve been a nice boost for the film barely hanging on to its Best Picture chances. Hugh Grant winning might’ve solidified his chances at an unexpected Best Actor nomination. But Stan winning for “A Different Man” when he’s arguably closer to a nomination for “The Apprentice” is fascinating. If nothing else, this seems like a good boost for Stan to snag the fifth Best Actor spot for his role as Donald Trump. Many in the industry have understandably shied away from that film, but perhaps seeing a great speech from Stan could help push him over the edge.

FLOW WINS BEST ANIMATED FEATURE
In one of the coolest Golden Globe surprises in recent memory, “Flow” won Best Animated Feature. The Latvian film beat more mainstream contenders “The Wild Robot” and “Inside Out 2.” This is reminiscent of last year when most prognosticators pegged “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” to win the Oscar before “The Boy and the Heron” won the Golden Globe. That shifted the tide in the direction of Miyazaki’s film, which ended up winning the Oscar. Could that happen yet again? That seems tough to believe, but “Flow” winning here is truly remarkable. It’s possible the Academy fully shifted away from Hollywood animation and gives “Flow” the Oscar, but the safe bet is still on “The Wild Robot,” at least for now.

OTHER NOTABLE MOMENTS:

• Kieran Culkin won Best Supporting Actor for his role in “A Real Pain.” Nearly everyone has predicted an unstoppable sweep for Culkin, and there’s no reason to believe otherwise.
• “Challengers” won Best Original Score, besting strong competition from “The Brutalist” and “Conclave.” The safe money is still on either of those films, but this is a good boost for the Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross score, and perhaps all the reason to add it to your predictions for a nomination.
• “Wicked” took home the award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. While this award is still in its infancy, at least the film can’t say it went home empty-handed.

The Globes certainly had a lot of surprises in store, but it gives lots of clarity to the race moving forward. Finally, many of these races feel more understandable. Even so, Best Picture feels as unpredictable as ever. The races will continue to tighten up as we get many more nominations this week.
